Welcome to Set Plays: Best Practices for Youth Soccer Administrators, our new member services blog at Washington Youth Soccer. Just like a set play, volunteers and administrators put soccer in motion in local soccer communities across our state with strategy and preparation. Each WA Youth Soccer player that takes the field is supported by hundreds of people behind the scenes who share the same goal: to make soccer the game for all kids.
So who supports the supporters? Washington Youth Soccer. For the past forty-five years, we have evolved from the kitchen table gathering at Karl and Helga Grosch’s home to a state-wide organization supporting over 125,000 players, 41 associations, more than 200 clubs, and thousands of coaches, referees, volunteers, and administrators. Our office staff, board of directors, committees, and members work together to support each other through education, service, and a commitment to running the best nonprofit soccer organizations in Washington State.
Our organizations are looking for the best way to deliver soccer and run nonprofit organizations while their board members and administrators are working fulltime jobs, spending time with their families and putting time in on the field as well; it’s a tough balancing act. From meeting with local volunteers and administrators over the past several months, we felt the need for support of more than just players and coaches on a technical level; more clarity on resources for nonprofit management and best practices were needed as well.
We are fortunate to live in a community rich in both soccer culture and nonprofit resources, coalitions and support. But how to cut through the noise? How to know which blog post or webinar is giving the right direction? How to harness the power of the resources around us? That is where Set Plays comes in – the goal of this blog is to make your life easier by pointing you to useful resources, accumulating best practices, and having a dialogue with you about what policies mean to you and your organization. We’re excited for Set Plays to be a new tool for your WA Youth Soccer experience.
We look forward to the blog becoming an open forum – a place where we all discuss, debate and share so that greater insight is brought to the practices we are implementing in our organizations. Additionally, I am always here to discuss offline as well – if you have questions about a posting, a suggestion for a posting or a discussion point outside of the blog, you can send me a direct message at: hillary@WashingtonYouthSoccer.org.
